Main Speaker 13 Nov Using the Struts Framework to Build Enterprise Applications Sue Spielman
Wednesday, November 13, 2002 7:15-8:45 p.m. University of Denver Sturm Hall Room 451 (map) Cost: Free Description: In this presentation we will focus on how to use the Jakarta Struts project in your application development. Struts is an open source framework useful in building web applications with Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages (JSP)technology. Based on the Model-View-Controller pattern, the framework brings a significant advantage to your application development -- which explains the rapid growth in popularity of the Struts project. We will learn not only about what the various Struts components are, but also how to use them by walking through a sample J2EE application. We will explore how to setup and configure the struts-config.xml file, build Action classes, dispatch requests to appropriate Action classes, use the available JSP custom tag libraries to build interactive form-based applications, as well as how to use the various utility classes to support XML parsing, automatic population of JavaBeans properties based on the Java reflection APIs, and internationalization of prompts and messages. Speaker: Sue Spielman is President and Senior Consulting Engineer of Switchback Software, an established consulting firm that specializes in business and web application development using the latest in J2EE and J2ME technologies. Sue is the JSP/Servlet columnist for O'Reilly's OnJava.com. She is frequently published in industry magazines including JavaPro, XML and Web Services, and Devx.com. She continues to be a sought after speaker at various conferences around the country. Sue has written a number of books, including: "The Struts Framework - A Practical Guide for Java Programmers" (Morgan Kaufmann), soon to be released "JSTL - JavaServer Pages Standard Tag Library" (O'Reilly) and "Web Conferencing Made Easy" (working title, AMACOM 2003). Sue has been the technical reviewer for dozens of Java books from various publishers. She sits on the advisory board for Metrowerks, a Motorola company. Sue holds an MS of Computer Information Systems as well as a BS in Computer Science. sspielman@switchbacksoftware.com.
