9 Apr Bitter EJB: Learning from Antipatterns
Mike Clark, Clarkware Consulting
7:15-8:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003
Location: Qwest Auditorium (map)
Cost: Free

Description:
Enterprise JavaBeans is a server-side component technology intended to help solve a particular class of business problems. Despite these good intentions, the technology often comes up short. In some cases, the technologies can let us down. In others, we can stumble blindly into common pitfalls.

This presentation will tour designs gone bad -- expressed as antipatterns -- when session, entity, and message-driven beans are misused. Along the way we'll explore common architecture, design, and performance antipatterns discussed in the upcoming book, "Bitter EJB." Taking a lesson from each antipattern presented, we'll discuss practical solutions. Finally, we'll examine antipatterns related to the EJB performance-tuning process and learn how to use JUnitPerf to tune with confidence.

Speaker:
Mike Clark is president and principal consultant of Clarkware Consulting, Inc., offering pragmatic software architecture, design, development, and performance consulting and mentoring services.

Mike has been crafting software professionally for 10 years, with five years of Java expertise focused on server-side development using J2EE technologies. He is a co-author of the upcoming book, "Bitter EJB" (Manning), expected to be published this spring. He has also developed several open-source tools, including JUnitPerf, a collection of JUnit extensions for continuous performance testing. In addition, Mike regularly speaks on his experiences in the trenches helping teams build better software faster.

9 Apr Basic Concepts: Introduction to Antipatterns
Scott Davis
6-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003
Location: Qwest Auditorium (map)
Cost: Free

Description:
AntiPatterns are solutions that create more problems than they solve. Antipatterns allow us to understand when and how to apply patterns and solutions within a particular context and when not to apply them. Through antipatterns, we can use a common vocabulary to describe our misery and help each other stay clear of pitfalls. Come learn some basic antipatterns, how to avoid them, and how to recover from them.

Scott Davis, DenverJUG President
